What Freedom Means to Small Business Owners, Book Released

We coming up on our 250th anniversary. Freedom is important to small businesses. Without the right to build a company anyway you choose, small business owners would not be successful. In some countries, workers who run businesses do it for the state instead of their own prosperity. In the United States, we have the right to property and the pursuit of happiness. Here are reasons why small business owners should be grateful that they opened their companies here in America.

1. No Advertising Restrictions -- Except for a few industries that are regulated, companies can advertise they way they want. They can write their ads that's put their companies in the best light even if they aren't 100 percent honest.  In addition, business owners can advertise on any medium. They can choose social media advertising, newspaper or online publication ads, radio or podcast ads, television or YouTube ads, or digital advertising.

2.  Potential Profits -- Small business owners can earn huge profits or no profits at all. It is up to how they manage their companies, but for the most part, you are entitled to what you earn. You do have to pay your taxes, but you can keep everything else you earn. If you want to create a nonprofit or not-for-profit organization, you have the right to do that too. You can make your company public by selling shares or keep it private. These are your choices to make. Many of the largest companies today started as small businesses. Dupont began in the colonial days and still remains today. You can start your legacy or edit your way to potential profits.

3. Creativity -- This country encourages creativity and innovation. People with a good idea can make a splash and launch a movement. They are given money by billionaires plus help with their projects. Some small business owner ideas can disrupt industries, such as streaming services supplanting cable or video tapes. Our innovation and creativity go back to Benjamin Franklin and other founding fathers who studied science and invented new ways of doing things. We continue to innovate and search for easier ways of doing things. Artificial intelligence is one way we are innovating today.

4. Education -- While many countries around the world have a better education system, this country offers the freedom to learn whatever you want. You can go on YouTube or a Masterclass site and take a class. You might already have a degree or you might have dropped out of school. That doesn't matter. You still can learn a new skill. You can change careers too. If you have been a nurse for 30 years and want to become a chef for your next chapter, you have the right to do that.

New Children's Book Released

As part of America's right to free speech, books are a great way to do marketing or just publish something fun to read. I fall into the latter category. I like having the right to publish what I want to write. Notorious Nick and the Devastating Hurricane is my second book in the Notorious Nick series. This time, Nick faces The Superintendent's fear spell that is scaring everyone in Philadelphia's magical community. Nick can see through the fears and think logically. Along with his family, they have to save a wizard and stop the fears from spreading before it's too late. The book was released June 15, 2026, and in time for hurricane season. The book is available on Amazon

Settings Give You Time and Place

In addition to my editing , writing and marketing , I also coach writing for fiction and nonfiction . Many people are unsure how to start. I like to start with characters and setting. When you begin a novel, you have to decide on a setting. It is more than a place. Settings also include time of day, seasons and the year a novel takes place. Settings also could be a state of mind. For example, sometimes, novels are set in people's minds where the main character has created a world. Sci-Fi and Fantasy use people's minds as a setting a lot. Inception or Ready Player 1 are two movies that are primarily in people's minds.  All my novels take place in Philadelphia in modern day. The times and seasons fluctuate depending on what the story is. Many are near the Delaware River, which is the above picture. In my latest book, The 1776 Soldier , I have two settings, one set in fall of 1776 and one in fall of 2023. This was my first time using two different settings. It was a ...

How to Save Money and Environment

For this year's Earth Day, I plan to write tips on how small businesses can help the environment and still save money. Usually, I debunk myths about the environment, but I have done a few of those blogs. If you want to read about those myths, you can click on the link. Buy Remanufactured Electronics -- Computers, cell phones, electronics and old gadgets are filling up landfills at a high rate. Most computer components and cell phones can't be recycled. With cell phone companies, they ask consumers to replace their phone every two or three years. Then, they choose not to support the older software, which means people have to throw away their phones for a new one even though they have one that works fine. Small business owners can buy remanufactured computers or toner to save money and the environment. These computers put newer components in older casings, which means they do not end up in landfills. They are usually several hundred dollars cheaper than those that are brand ne...

How to Write Characters in Your Fiction

Authors have to figure out their characters first before they begin plotting or creating a setting. Sometimes, the characters and setting come at the same time, such as a lady in Regency England. When authors determine the characters, they are able to fit a setting around them. Here are things to consider when writing characters . Sometimes, authors are unsure how many characters are enough for a story. The answer depends on the type of fiction and author's taste. Fantasy authors often use 10 to 12 main characters to build out a world while romance authors can stick to about four or five. Children's authors use one or two. You need interaction, world-building and suspense, but you also do not want to confuse your reader with two many characters. This confusion often shows up in movies when directors pack a movie with characters and fail to develop them. If you are unsure, let someone outside your genre read it to tell you.  The most believable characters have ...
